Reference project: 73,000 tons of waste per year!

Sanergy was one of the finalists for the Earthshot Prize (https://earthshotprize.org/). They reached the top 3 in their category!

"The Earthshot Prize is the most ambitious and prestigious of its kind – designed to incentivise change and help to repair our planet over the next ten years."

This award is being promoted by Prince William of the Royal United Kingdom family. It will be live on BBC tv and has performances of world artists (like Ed Sheeran and Coldplay). That farming of the black soldier fly is being promoted on this large stage is a fantastic achievement and ackknowledges that it is a great way to build a waste-free world.

History:

In 2009 at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), David Auerbach, Lindsay Stradley, and Ani Vallabhaneni were tasked with developing a solution to a poverty challenge facing 1 billion people or more around the world. They developed a full value chain approach to addressing the sanitation crisis, offering a sustainable solution for urban slums.

With that project, Sanergy was born.

In 2019 this resulted in giving approval to build a large scale Black Soldier Fly production facility and to expend the BSF breeding facility. The new production facility can process 200 tons of waste streams per day. Meaning a significant 73.000 tons per year! The facility has been taken into production in 2020.

Waste streams like for example:

  • Sanitation waste
  • House hold waste
  • Fruit and vegetable waste

Are processed on a daily basis at a centralized facility and put into valuable end products such as insect based animal feed and organic fertilizer.

The Black Soldier Fly production is realized in the ZOEM racks and supported by the related machinery. All growing rooms are well insulated and are fully climate controlled. The processing area consists of a massive sorting and drying installation. On this way Sanergy is in control of the breeding, production and processing.

Sanergy is a beautiful example of progressive company who hasn’t been afraid in taking these steps and becoming a market leader. At Insect Engineers we have worked very nice together with the people of Sanergy to realize this project and will keep working together for the long promising future to realize their new company goals.
